Week One

After finally getting our keys, we were off work for a week. The first thing we knew we needed to organise was the removal of all the previous owners furniture, thankfully this was something our auctioneer was able to arrange. We decided that it made sense for Martin to tackle the dirty work first – chasing the walls to instal more sockets in places we needed them i.e. the kitchen counter top, and around the new bed locations in our bedrooms. And repairing the settlement cracking inside & out. Both involved a lot of dust and filler!

Our fabulous family helped us get the yard in order and start priming & painting the internal doors & trim. Our biggest priority was getting the garden secure for Theo the cockapoo so he could come with us when we finally got a handle on things & would be painting & building furniture. The house was used mainly as a holiday home, and so we also decided we wanted to replace the carpets so more of our lovely friends helped Martin carve it up and toss out the windows for collection.

Once Martin had a handle on the dirty jobs, the next biggest priority was our en suite. I desperately wanted our bath first, but at 8 months pregnant & a wait time of 3/4 weeks for our bath of choice I was overruled. We decided on a thermostatic shower ran off our pressurised hot water system – one of the best decisions we made, its like a hotel shower! We also went for PVC panel for the shower enclosure as it was quicker than waiting for a tiles & much cheaper. Originally we weren’t sold on the idea as even the 2010s options were shiny white plastic but there is a lot nicer tones & finishes available now. Luckily there was already a shower tray installed & piping installed for the would be shower which also helped time wise. There was already a sink & loo in place, which came up like new with the help of barkeepers friend cleaner. We sourced a vinyl floor in the style of a grey wood which Martin laid loosely so we could have a functioning bathroom.

At the time it felt like we had a million mammoth tasks, but by week one we had walls ready for painting, a secure garden, a shower ready to be plumbed & primed internal doors.
