Hello! Again! We have been very quiet on our blog for a number of weeks & we do apologise. We have had a whirlwind of a month between our little man turning one, me returning to work after maternity leave & learning a new job, as well as the little man settling into a new childminder. Add in Martin doing a masters & me doing a night course and the time to do house improvements, let alone write about them, becomes a tad bit taxing!
At the moment we are loving the cosy early evenings, settling into the fire with a good movie and a cosy blanket. It got me thinking of all the things we love at this time of year. I find I love the autumnal colours dotted around the house, strong smelling candles lighting & comfort food cooking.
You might have seen on Instagram our reel on how I like to change our house into a cosy autumn space without hanging Halloween decorations everywhere. I do like Halloween, but I’m really not pushed on the decorating side of it. Christmas is a totally different story & I can’t wait to spam you on all things in that department in a couple of weeks!
I find a lot of people are similar minded when it comes to Halloween. If you want to achieve this I really recommend some nice tartan styled blankets with a main background in cream & beige with the autumn colours you love as the secondary colour. I found a beautiful blanket in Harry Cory for €35 in a mix of greens, oranges & reds. But you could always just pick one of those colours. Similar for cushions, bedspreads, curtains etc.
I also think a strong candle or diffuser can hit you with that instant autumn feeling. I’m not a massive fan of Pumpkin Spice, but any of the Cedar Wood, Coriander Seed, Lavender, Cinnamon, Clove, Nutmeg, Orange, Vanilla & Spices smells instantly make you want to grab a blanket, a cuppa & put on a good movie in front of a roaring fire.
The final thing I think gives you that instant autumnal feeling is comfort food! A simmering casserole, apple crumble smothered in custard or a hot whiskey. While we are absolutely not a foodie blog, it is definitely a massive part of our house feeling like a home. And in particular in the autumn months when the slow cooker is out & the smells are drifting down the house. This brings me onto something I’ve recently discovered – a simmer pot. Basically you add water & fruits/spices to a pot on the cooker, bring to the boil & then let it simmer on a low heat for a number of hours. I like the idea of ‘natural’ smells in the home & this could be a good option if you’re like minded.
And I’m going to finish this very rambling blog post here! Here’s a ‘I’ll try’ to get back to our weekly postings about more renovation works (weekly might prove more difficult at the min). However, I will also start doing posts on where I’ve bought certain home buys, reviews on expos we attend/things we buy or use, this or that’s & more all rounded ‘home’ things. From recent Instagram polls I feel a lot of people would like more information/chatty posts on these kind of things. And while I am very camera shy, I’ll do my best to give it a whirl!
Eve x
