Vintage Pieces

As a historian and a lover of days gone by, the revival of vintage pieces being brought back to life in our modern homes is a trend I can massively get on board with. My grandmother gifted me so many of her beautiful collections that I am dying to get displayed once we get around to the more fun items of shelving, built ins and cabinets. Growing up in the in the pottery capital of Europe at the time, she had many tea sets, Wedgwood, ornamental plates & much more to pass on. I think my most prized possession is her 1950s Singer sewing machine, which is something I am very eager to have on display. This love of history means I love to see what pieces others are collecting and how they plan to showcase, display or even bring back to life in their homes. Below are some of my favourites!

‘Tile mat’ in the Hallway

The Victorian style tiled hallway is well and truly having a revival. But to replicate this can be costly. What I have seen a lot of recently is people using their entryway; porch or just the first couple of feet of their hall as a nod to this trend. There are a lot of these examples all over Instagram. Some have a ‘mat’ size, while others have gone the whole hog, covering their entire floor. And some people are lucky enough to uncover an original Victorian tiled hallway. Lucky ducks! The general idea is a black and check checkerboard effect or in other cases there is additional colours and patterns added to make it even more spectacular. This is a must edition for me whenever we get around to the hallway floor.

Trinkets

Thrifting is huge at the moment, whether it is antique shops, second hand shops or car boot sales, there is a huge interest in modernising the old to make it work in our homes. These items can seem like junk or too loud when all piled together, but one or two pieces together can give such character to an otherwise plain space. Instagram is teaming with nods to the past and I am here for it! Being able to add pieces such a weighing scales, candle sticks, ceramic jewellery holders or decorative plates into modern kitchens, bedrooms and sitting rooms is a skill, but with so much inspiration around its hard not to want to give it a try.

Medicine & Flagon Jugs

These are some of my favourite items to see making a come back. We had these displayed at home as kids long before it was popular as my grandfather owned a pub at one time and had a number of these. Unfortunately, over the years they got broken or disappeared but I love seeing how people style them with their flowers & herbs from the garden. Or even just popped on shelves so show their beauty. I love the simple colour of them, making them blend to any interior style seamlessly.

Tea & Coffee Sets

I think most of us go through a phase of playing ‘tea’, especially little girls. I was lucky enough to have two grandmothers who had ‘piece sets’ in all colours and shapes, some with tea pots, coffee pots, milk jugs or even sugar bowls. For me, whether used for their intended purpose of fancy tea dates with your friends or a unique light fitting, tea sets are an absolute staple when it comes to a vintage nod in your home. The choices available even today are insane and can be picked up for small money if you just want a couple of items.

Fabrics & Textiles

For anyone who just doesn’t know where to begin, or just doesn’t want someone else’s second hand pieces in their home but would like that vintage feel, fabrics and textiles could be your answer. Whether it’s a huge rug for the sitting room, cushion covers for the bedroom or even some new tea towels, there is a massive choice available. Shops such as TK Maxx have some beautiful options at the moment, or if you want to try your hand at crafting your own stores like Vibes and Scribes are teaming with fabric options.

I hope that has given you some idea on where to start if this is something you’re interested in! I hope to also share some of my absolute favourite accounts over on Instagram that has inspired this blog with their love of vintage, antiques and unique style. If you have any must have vintage pieces we should include, drop us a message in Instagram!
